4. Who was the one to trigger the ultimate weapon and why?
SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
E. Answer each question in 50-60 words.
1. Why did Dr Carl think that objects could be made invisible?
Answer: It was General Case's assumption based on the theories of other scientists, that it might be possible to make an object disappear. Dr. Carl assured the General that up till now he has not read anything about this theory. He asked for a month's time from the General, to see if they can do something to help the General or not.
2. What happened to the metal wastebasket after the initial test?
Answer: The pulse that came out of the barrel not only knocked off Dr. Carl from his feet but also mangled the wastebasket which was made of metal. The mangled wastebasket was too hot to touch.
3. What was the initial device lacking in?
Answer: The initial pulse emitter lacked in power. To give more force and power to the pulse emitter, both the scientists decided to combine the energy from the generator with a repetitively pulsed laser.
4. What made Dr Celia apprehensive before triggering the ultimate weapon?
Answer: Dr. Celia Moore was the one to trigger the ultimate weapon. Dr. Dobson handed her the triggering device but she was a little apprehensive because she and Dr. Dobson did not know the power of the weapon. But in the end, the weapon had to be fired in order to test it.
LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS
F. Answer each question in 60-80 words.
1. What did General Case tell the scientists to develop? How could it help the military?
Answer: General Case wanted Dr. Dobson and Dr. Moore to develop a weapon which could make the enemy disappear. General Case assured Dr. Dobson and Dr. Moore that his scientists have been theorizing that it might be possible to make an object disappear. According to him, he believed that Dr. Dobson and Dr. Moore were two experts who could turn this theory into reality.
2. Describe the initial weapon designed by the two scientists.
Answer: The initial device was battery operated, was shaped like a blunderbuss, emitted pulses out of the barrel and looked good enough to be tested. They tested the gun on a metal waste basket. The shot knocked off Dr. Dobson from his feet and mangled the waste basket.
3. What message does the story deliver?
Answer: The story tells us that weapons of mass destruction do have an adverse affect. Governments and organizations should use science to create and not to destroy. Science, if used carefully and reasonably can be a boon to humanity. The nations in a rush to dominate each other are using science destructively.
